By Debora MacKenzie

AFTER decades of disappointment, we may have a new lead on fighting Alzheimer’s disease. Compelling evidence that the condition is caused by a bacterium involved in gum disease could prove a game-changer in tackling one of medicine’s biggest mysteries, and lead to effective treatments or even a vaccine.

"Earth could warm by 14°C as growing emissions destroy crucial clouds"

ENVIRONMENT 25 February 2019

By Michael Le Page

If we keep burning fossil fuels with reckless abandon, we could trigger a cloud feedback effect that will add 8°C on top of all the warming up to that point. That means the world could warm by more than 14°C above the pre-industrial level.

MICHAEL WEST got talking to a guy next to him on an aeroplane. “The man asked what I did and I told him,” says West. The man seemed impressed and West continued, thinking he had a friendly audience. “But after a while he said: ‘You’re lying to me. I read everything and I’ve never heard any of this. This is so amazing and so revolutionary that if it was true, I would know about it already’.”

School of Medicine reduces student debt by 50% over two years

february 18, 2019

The School of Medicine announced that it is reducing the unit loan — the amount that medical students who receive need-based scholarships are expected to borrow — from $23,000 to $15,000 per year for all students attending in the 2019-2020 academic year and thereafter. Together with the unit loan reduction that went into effect for the current academic year — from $30,000 to $23,000 — this is a reduction of 50% in two years. This means that more of a student's demonstrated need will be covered by scholarship funds, and less by loans.
